Gill grew up in Petoskey and graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing. He also attended Kendall College of Art and Design. He is a member of various associations, such as the National Association of REALTORS (NAR), The Michigan Association of REALTORS (MAR), and the Emmet Association of REALTORS (EAR). He served for 20 years on the Board of Directors of the Emmet Association of Realtors. Gill has been recognized for his dedication to the profession, receiving the "Realtor of The Year" award in 2009 from his peers.

In addition to his work, Gill enjoys spending time on the water during the summer months, engaging in power boating and sailing, as well as sailboat racing, He belongs to the Little Traverse Yacht Club, and the Petoskey Yacht Club, which he co-founded.
